A stay in a refined and comfortable environment, in a characteristic and panoramic setting, in the historic center. Ideal for a couple, it offers a splendid view and the possibility to move easily on foot and to visit the baroque monuments of Ragusa Ibla.

Cu Viva accommodation is located in the historic center of Ragusa, in the province of the same name in southeastern Sicily, the Baroque heart of the Val di Noto.
It rises in the district of Santa Maria delle Scale, a characteristic network of alleys and huts with a typical Sicilian flavor that overlook the opposite valley and offer a splendid panoramic view of Ragusa Ibla.
It is in Corso Mazzini, a sinuous road full of panoramic views, and overlooks a stepped square from which you access a historic staircase, a path full of seventeenth-century buildings and Baroque churches that connects the upper and lower parts of the city.
It is 25 km from the sandy beaches of Marina di Ragusa and 28 km from “Pio La Torre” airport of Comiso.

The history and the neighborhood
The accommodation, inside, is characterized by two main rooms, extremely different from each other.
The first, the living room, has richly decorated grit floors and colored Marsala terracotta walls, all illuminated by an ancient gilded plaster chandelier, with Baroque-style decorations.
The second, a large bedroom with writing desk and sitting area, has much more muted colors and is surmounted by a sand-colored lowered pavilion vault.
The dualism of the colors characterizing the two main rooms and the middle position of the apartment lend themselves to telling the eternal journey between Sicily and Milan, between south and north between the Mediterranean and the continent.
The building that now houses Cu Viva apartment is one of the first houses built in Ragusa in the aftermath of the 1693 earthquake: it destroyed many towns of Val di Noto and marked the birth of the Iblean Baroque. The accommodation stands on a stepped square, a meeting place for liturgical and social events and, more recently, a film set: the director Giuseppe Tornatore, in the nineties, chose it as the set of the film “Man of the stars”, as well as numerous television commercials and scenes by Inspector Montalbano’s series had place here. Cu Viva and its interiors were also the set of the last episode of the series inspired by Andrea Camilleri’s stories, “Il metodo Catalanotti”).
In this square, until a few decades ago, all the inhabitants of the neighborhood gathered to recite the rosary, from the most destitute and modest populace, to the noble, the so-called gentleman “with 7 hats”. Not far from the district, along stairways and winding streets, stands the Arab quarter of San Paolo, known as “Raffo” for its characteristic terrace structure. In 1100, Roger the Norman chose this neighborhood as the site for a new Cistercian monastery which about two centuries later was transformed into a church, called Santa Maria delle Scale. The strategic position of the latter made it, in the aftermath of the post-earthquake reconstruction, a geographical demarcation point between the upper Ragusa, of the so-called “sangiovannari” (devotees of San Giovanni, patron saint of the “new” city) and the lower Ragusa of the so-called “sangiorgiari” (devotees of San Giorgio, patron saint of Ragusa Ibla). It is said that right here, real sentinels, at the cry of CU VIVA, were stationed to check that no “foreigner” dared to cross the borders of their territory. The interiors and the architectural and design criteria of the accommodation represent as many tales: the stories of an eclectic family that are intertwined with those of a place full of suggestions, in an aesthetic hybridized between the Iblei Mount area and Milan and between two generations.
