This picturesque coast located near Ispica and 50 km from Ragusa, along the southeastern coast of Sicily, is characterized by the presence of a golden sandy beach, called "Porto Ulisse", known for its superb panorama on its suggestive stacks. The limpid and crystalline sea offers calm waters thanks to the presence of a small inlet.
The beach is surrounded by the rocky promontory of Punta Castellazzo, where an ancient fortress was built in defense of the hinterland and the port.
The bay is served by a beach club that offers umbrellas and deckchairs, a bar and a restaurant.
Between legend and history
Cited by Cicero, Pliny and Ptolemy, Porto Ulisse is renowned as a legendary bay where the Homeric hero landed during his wanderings in the Mediterranean Sea. The archaeologists have identified here Apolline, a Roman station where it was possible to dry docking boats. Several findings, including fragments of a sixth-century Byzantine ship, were discovered in 1960 about 500 m from the coast.
